Introducing Close Call: How Close Can You Get to the Hidden Sports Word?

Close Call is our endless guessing game for sports fans. Guess your way toward a hidden sports word, and every guess tells you how close you are.

Somewhere in each round, one sports word is hiding. It might be a legendary player. It might be a team, a trophy, a position, or a concept every fan argues about. Your job? Guess your way to it, one word at a time.

That's Close Call, our endless guessing game, and we'll warn you right now: it's extremely fun and, some rounds, seriously difficult. There's no multiple choice and no trick questions. You type whatever comes to mind, and the game tells you how close you are. "Quarterback"? Warmer. "Brady"? Warmer still. The moment a guess comes back Extremely Close, your brain will not let you stop.

If you're the kind of fan who starts the morning with a word puzzle and ends the night winning an argument about the '96 Bulls, this one was built for you.

How it works

Every puzzle has one hidden word, drawn from a vast space of sports knowledge: players, teams, positions, trophies, and concepts spanning the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL, across eras. You type a guess, and Close Call scores it by meaning, not spelling. Each guess gets a rank: #1 is the answer itself, and bigger numbers mean you're further away.

Your feedback is instant and color-coded. A green #1 means you've solved it. Red means Extremely Close (ranks 2-10), orange is Very Close, yellow is Close, blue is Cool, and grey is stone Cold. Every guess also fills a little thermometer bar, and your guesses stay sorted closest-first, so you can always see the trail you're following. Fat-finger a name or type something the game doesn't know? You'll get tappable "Did you mean" suggestions instead of a dead end.

Why it's so addictive (and occasionally brutal)

Close Call lives in that perfect zone between "I've almost got it" and "how is that not the answer?!" Because guesses are ranked by meaning, you can feel yourself circling the target: sport, then league, then era, then the word itself. Some rounds you'll land it in six guesses and feel like a genius. Other rounds you'll sit at rank #4 for ten agonizing guesses while the answer laughs at you.

Here's the good news: the answer is never some obscure deep cut. Hidden words are always either general sports terms or genuinely famous names. The nichest stuff is fair game as a guess, but it'll never be the answer. When you finally crack a puzzle, hit "Why were these close?" for an AI-generated breakdown of how your guesses related to the answer. It's a great way to sharpen your instincts for the next round.

Tips for getting to #1

Start broad. Guesses like "football," "championship," or "pitcher" quickly tell you which neighborhood the answer lives in. Once something turns orange or red, mine that vein hard: teammates, rivals, the team, the era, the award.

Use your best rank as a compass. The header shows your guess count and your best rank so far, so you always know whether a new angle is helping or hurting. And if a puzzle truly breaks you, there's a "Give up & reveal" button. No shame, we've all been there. Just know it'll haunt you a little.

Play anytime and brag responsibly

Every round deals a fresh hidden word, so you can challenge your group chat, try a themed answer pool, or immediately play again. There is no calendar wait and no limit on how many words you can chase.

When you finish, share your result with one tap: a spoiler-free, Wordle-style trail of colored squares showing your journey from ice-cold to solved, with your guess count and heat trail but never the answer. Then deal another random word and keep going for as long as you can handle.

A hidden sports word is waiting. See how few guesses it takes you to hit #1.
